Pacem In Mortuos - Choreography by Zaini Mohd Tahir

Is death a release?

To fight death or give in to its reality?

To accept death or to ignore it?

Is death another process in self-discovery?

Is death but a reflection of life?

Can death be an elevated experience of life?

Does the uncertainty of death equate the sensation of fear?

Is death the final solution to our search in life?

Whatever the thoughts, this item presents another facets of human mortality

Ramayana - Choreography by Zaini Mohd Tahir

The multiplexity of human nature... Is there an absolute destiny or are we makers of our own? Can we subscribe to absolutism?

Ravana's treachery, lust and power... Isn't this the story of the Ramayana?

Rumi - Choreography by Zaini Mohd Tahir

Inspired by the Turkish whirling dervishes, Rumi simulates the movements of waves and reflects an individual's quest of a spiritual kind.

A journey. An expression. Universality of humankind.

Shantum - Choreography by Zaini Mohd Tahir

Shantum portrays a journey into our inner self. The journey depicts the search for an answer to a conflict. In trying to resolve the conflict, we are caught up in a struggle... confronting some issues and qualities and denying the deeper, darker ones. The constant juggling comes to rest when we accept that we are the sum of all these qualities. Although Shantum was born out of the choreographer's experience nonetheless he feels that it is a universal theme. The journey runs parallel to the kind of conflicts we face in a competitive environment. While striving to achieve our goals in life, we only show others that part of ourselves which will help us get on and suppress those qualities that will hamper us. It is only when we retreat into ourselves to examine our values and until we acknowledge that darker qualities exist in the dim recesses of our psyche, we cannot accept ourselves for what we are. For the choreographer, opening instead of closing the inner recesses of his mind provides new facets of his personality to explore, making him more aware that he is a complete being.

Sosei - Choreography by Juraimy Abu Bakar

The subtler psychological symptoms

on dance and its lifelong journey

should never be constant...

who is to say that within ugliness,

there is no grace and within

awkwardness, no beauty?

What is existence when the powerful

desire to be reborn is tantalising?

  Under the rubrics of existence

comes a certain notion of celebration

that has yet to be explored.

The raw brutality and transcendental

quality of the attempt to be reborn

wields a spiritual power

that not only speaks for

the angst-ridden passage of existence

but also strikes the inner chords

of consciousness.

To be reborn is to fight to the end,

for as long as there is oppression

to live life as it is,

the ongoing struggle

to control one's own destiny

and to provide alternative visions

of a true existence

will continue to unfold.

Extracts from The Next Wave 2000

The embellishment of the hideous,

the search for elegance amidst gracelessness, Sosei is spun from an animalistic desire to be reborn. This pulsating movement abounds with motion in celebration of being born again.
