The Next Wave 2001 - Body and Soul Annual Concert of the NUS Dance Ensemble Resident Choreographer: Zaini Mohd Tahir Presented by The Centre for the Arts, NUS “the joy, the laughter, the sadness , and the peace within… …”Rediscover the experience of raw human emotions within oneself in The Next Wave 2001 - Body and Soul. Featuring pieces choreographed by its Resident Choreographer, Zaini Mohd Tahir, alumni choreographers, and also guest choreographer Jeffrey Tan from the Singapore Dance Theatre, the Annual Concerts of the NUS Dance Ensemble will run in the University Cultural Centre Hall for three power-packed performances on 6, 7 and 8 September 2001. The Next Wave was inaugurated in 1996, exploding into a highly successful series of annual dance concerts. This platform for the Ensemble’s fresh and dynamic works aims to discover and groom new choreographers and talents in dance. By providing a space where artists and their works could be showcased, The Next Wave sets the stage for the development of innovative and original choreography fusing modern techniques and ethnic spirit to evolve unique dance forms, promoting creative self-expression in the search for a distinct cultural identity. The concert this year will explore the essence of human experience in Body and Soul. Expect a visual spectacle of dance and music combining colour, rhythm of ongoing movement and texture. Fluid and transformative pieces performed by dynamic dancers will transport audiences to a world of physical and spiritual experience as bodies intertwine, twirl, dip, and delve into the depths of the soul, expressing exhilaration and ecstasy. The NUS Dance Ensemble has earned wide recognition for its dedication in showcasing new talents and original works. As a platform for young dancers and choreographers, the group explores various facets of dance, incorporating dance movements such as jazz, ballet and oriental in their ever-changing, uncompromising and unconventional repertoire.
